The IGSA, an organization formed over 25 years ago to establish technology standards for the gaming industry, has evolved to address modern challenges under the leadership of president Mark Pace. Originally known as the Gaming Machine Manufacturers Association before changing to the Gaming Standards Association and finally the International Gaming Standards Association, the group has expanded globally to include members from Europe, Macau, Japan, and Africa. The idea for the organization stemmed from a letter by gaming technology pioneer John Acres, who highlighted the need for standardization across the sector.

As the gaming industry has grown, so has the IGSA’s membership, now including payment companies, igaming suppliers, and non-gaming firms like Intel. The organization plays a crucial role in shaping the current gaming landscape, from the development of Class II gaming to the launch of igaming in the US.

With Pace at the helm, the IGSA is now tackling more complex issues like artificial intelligence, cybercrime, and responsible gaming. Building relationships with regulators worldwide has become essential, particularly as new regulators without prior gaming experience enter the fold.

In a recent example, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission faced criticism for appointing regulators with no gaming background. The IGSA provides crucial guidance to ensure regulations are consistent and practical. Pace emphasized the importance of having ex-regulators on board to offer insights into navigating new technologies within the gaming industry.

As the organization looks ahead to 2025 and beyond, Pace remains committed to advancing technology within the gaming industry and collaborating with stakeholders to address key challenges. The IGSA continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of gaming technology on a global scale.
