Massachusetts Sets New Record for Lowest Sports Betting Revenue in August

In Massachusetts, sports betting revenue took a hit in August, reaching a calendar year-low. However, the state was able to report year-on-year growth in both revenue and handle. The combined taxable revenue from online and retail sports betting in August was $33.3m, a significant increase of 51.4% compared to last year. Despite this growth, it was 19.2% lower than July, making it the lowest monthly figure for the year.

Online betting dominated the revenue landscape, accounting for $32.9m of the total, while retail sportsbooks lagged behind with just $381,134 in revenue. The total handle for sports betting in August was $447.3m, showing a strong increase of 42.1% compared to last year. It was also 8.6% higher than the handle in July.

Players in Massachusetts spent a total of $439.7m on online betting in August, with an additional $7.6m spent at retail sportsbooks. The overall hold for the state’s market in August was 7.71%, with online betting slightly higher at 7.74% and retail at 6.12%.

DraftKings continued to lead the online market in Massachusetts, generating $16.2m in revenue from $229.4m in bets, with a hold percentage of 7.33%. FanDuel followed closely behind with $10.7m in revenue and a higher hold of 9.26%. BetMGM and Bally Bet also performed well in the market.

Moving on to the land-based casino market, total gross gaming revenue from table games and slots in August reached $103.3m, a 5.5% increase from last year. Slots GGR accounted for $69.0m, while table games brought in $34.3m. Encore Boston Harbor continued to dominate the market, bringing in $64.9m in total revenue for the month.

Overall, despite the dip in sports betting revenue, the Massachusetts market showed promising growth in both online and retail sectors. The state remains a key player in the gambling industry, with top operators like DraftKings and Encore Boston Harbor leading the way in revenue generation.
