In the bustling world of Pennsylvania gambling, the latest report shows a significant boost in revenue for the month of August. The total gambling revenue for the state reached an impressive $525.5m, marking a 14.9% increase from the previous year and a 4.9% jump from July of this year. This growth was largely fueled by the state’s thriving igaming market, which saw a near-record performance in August.
The standout figure in August was the igaming revenue, which amounted to a whopping $183.7m. This marked a 29% increase from the previous year and stands as the second-highest monthly total on record, just narrowly missing the record set in March 2024 with $191.1m. Online slots were the primary driver of igaming revenue, accounting for $138.3m, while table games brought in $43.2m and poker revenue reached $2.2m for the month.
Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course continues to lead the market, posting $72.1m in online casino revenue for the month of August. Valley Forge Casino Resort followed closely behind with $46.0m, and Rivers Casino Philadelphia saw $30.8m in revenue.
On the sports betting front, gross revenue hit $45.4m, a 48.4% increase from last year, although it was 13.9% less than July’s total. After factoring in promotional credits, taxable revenue reached $30.0m for the month. Online betting brought in $25.5m in gross revenue, with retail contributing $4.5m.
The total spend on sports betting in Pennsylvania during August amounted to $485.3m, a 23.5% increase from last year, with online handle at $457.6m and retail at $27.7m. The overall market hold for the month was 9.4%, with online hold at 9.0% and retail at 16.2%.
FanDuel, in partnership with Valley Forge Casino Resort, maintained its position as the frontrunner in the operator landscape, generating $13.3m in gross revenue from $176.5m in bets, with a 10.4% hold. DraftKings, partnered with Hollywood Casino at the Meadows, followed closely behind with $7.8m in gross revenue off a $124.4m handle, resulting in a 9.1% hold.
While online gambling continues to soar, land-based slots remain the primary source of gambling revenue in Pennsylvania, bringing in $211.1m in August, up 3.9% from last year. However, revenue from physical table games slipped 2.1% to $81.0m. Video gaming terminal revenue edged up 5.7% to $3.7m, while fantasy sports took a hit with an 18.3% decrease to $647,522.
